1984: Book 2 Ch. 4 & 5

Quote: "They simply swallowed everything, and what they swallowed did them no harm, because it left no residue behind, just as a grain of corn will pass undigested through the body of a bird"(156).

Significance: This quote is significant because it once again shows how the Party has basically brain-washed all of the people into believing what they say. No one really knows the whole truth about anything because they aren't even given the chance to believe anything other than what the Party tells them is right. Even if the people did want to try to find out about the past, there is no trace of anything that happened before that time. What they are told now is all that ever was, basically.

Define 2 words:
bolster (136): n. - a pillow or cushion

deprecating (151): v. - to express disapproval of; deplore
