1984: Chapter 4

Quote: "Comrade Ogilvy, who had never existed in the present, now existed in the past, and when once the act of forgery was forgotten, he would exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar" (47-48).

Significance: Through this quote, we not only see how other people have control of the present, but that Winston is involved. Since Winston is a part of altering the past, he in turn has control of the future too. Coming up with the person, Comrade Ogilvy, shows us that Winston now has the power to manipulate what the people think or should think. The people could now think that this man may or may not haev existed before because there is no proof of him whatsoever until now.
This seems to be leading to a forshadowing of Winston maybe becoming a part of the Party.
